Dish Link Case Study

BACKGROUND

This instruction was received following confirmation from the client that tree growth in the vicinity of the All England Lawn Tennis Club had resulted in two telecommunications base stations going off line. The trees blocking the sites could not be pruned prior to the start of the 2011 Championships therefore alternative links had to be found for the affected dishes to ensure both sites were returned to operation by the start of the 2011 Championships in Mid June 2011.

This case study deals specifically with 1 of the two sites involved in the proposal.

The site in question was a 7 storey privately owned residential block overlooking the All England Tennis Club. Due to the detrimental impact on the visual amenity of the area the mobile telecommunications installation was placed behind a wooden shroud atop the lift motor room. Unfortunately due to the design of the steelwork in the shroud and the new bearing required to reinstate the link the dish needed to be re located from its current position behind the shroud to a new position on the rooftop.

Sitec were therefore instructed by the client to liaise with the building owner / tenants to find a new position on the rooftop that reinstated the link while mitigating the impact on the visual amenity of the area and inconvenience to the occupiers of the building.

The timeline for the work is shown below:-

  • Instruction to assess suitable sites for additional dish received on the 24 March 2011.
  • Lease assessment returned to client for consideration on the 28 March 2011.
  • Preferred sites nominated by the client on the 15th April 2011.
  • Initial contact made with landlords / buildings agent to try and resolve matters 4 May 2011.
  • Landlords agent agreed in principle to the proposal to relocate the affected dish subject to site meeting with the tenant of the top floor flat who also had a summer house on the rooftop beneath the installation 16 May 2011.
  • Site visit held with rooftop tenant on 18 May 2011 – At this meeting a new dish position using the steelwork supporting the cabinet was agreed. As part of the proposal it was agreed that our client would replace the rotten timber around the antenna shroud.
  • Approval to new dish position given by Agent for the landlord and tenant of the rooftop 31 May 2011.

In conclusion the new dish position was successfully integrated into the network in time for the 2011 Championships.
